DETROIT // DATABASS REC / TWILIGHT 76 REC
The rise of DJ Godfather to his current level of success is no mystery to anyone who looks at the history of his career. His constant efforts to improve and build his work have paid off, and he has stepped to the forefront as a key player in his industry. By doing so, he has helped bring the genres of ghettotech and electro to their current prominence in American music culture. His abilities as both DJ and producer have worked hand-in-hand to make him an icon both behind-the-scenes and on the nightclub/party circuit.
Inspired by the work of Detroit's Juan Atkins and Miami's Luke, DJ Godfather has taken the world of ghettotech by storm. As owner of Twilight 76 and Databass Records, he has maintained a strong presence in the ghettotech/electro industry by using these record labels to promote the latest innovations from Detroit artists. He has over forty (40) personal releases under his belt, and has been featured on the compilations , From Beyond: Interdimensional Transmissions (*67), DJ Westbam (Sony and Lowspirit), and Comin' From Tha D' (Intuit-Solar). His Player Hater's CD was in rotation for over seventeen weeks on WJLB 97.9 in Detroit, and 20-30 of his tracks can be heard on the radio every week on various Detroit Mix Shows. These statistics testify to his abilities as a producer. He also started a distribution company with Electrofunk/Assault Rifle Records, founded by DJ Assault and Mr. De'. His remixes include tracks by Luke and DJ LAZ.
A DJ recognized equally for his ability to drop a set of either electro, hip-hop, or booty, DJ Godfather eventually reached the point in the late '90s where he could integrate each of these often clashing sounds into the same set, a quickly mixed collage of bass-heavy beats. In addition to his role as a mind-blowing DJ unwilling to stick with conventional techniques, Godfather also managed to release a substantial canon of work on the Twilight 76 label and its spin-off, Databass, which also illustrated his diverse taste in bass music. Of course, it took several years for him to merge these styles together in a seamless manner, as he often paraded as either a hip-hop, electro, or booty DJ, depending on his audience. His first mix CD, Da Bomb, Vol. 1, stands as a perfect example of how he suddenly shifts from bass music to hip-hop near the conclusion of the mix as if he were two different DJs. Yet this ability to morph into whatever rocked the given crowd earned him a cult following in Detroit, where he would often cater to both the hip-hop and rave communities.
As the '90s came to a close, Godfather began to evolve into his signature style as a producer of what was then known as booty music - bass-heavy electro tainted with sleazy ideology and hip-hop accessibility - scoring a huge anthem with "Player Haters in This House," which he stretched out into a booty-themed album of the same name. Yet at the same time that he began churning out booty tracks on Databass he was also releasing purist electro records on Twilight 76. During this same time, another Detroit DJ/producer, DJ Assault, was doing similar work, marrying techno with booty music and releasing numerous records similar to Godfather's "Player Haters in This House." By the time Godfather released Da Bomb, Vol. 3, he finally had a healthy palette of techno-flavored booty tracks to work with thanks to Assault and was able to navigate his way through numerous musical styles seamlessly - electro, bass, booty, hip-hop, and jungle - creating a collage of sounds referred to by many as ghettotech. As the '90s drew to a close he continued this synthesis, releasing additional EPs on Twilight 76 and Databass while further perfecting his unparalleled DJing techniques.
Ghetto Tech never really caught on outside of its home. It's as Detroit as the Tigers. And its producers do not feel that they need to domesticate it, as their home-based sales are heavy. Godfather is known to sell upwards of 15,000 copies of a record - in Detroit and Miami alone.
Constantly pushing his music forward, DJ Godfather has taken his love of production to the extreme by producing his Hip Hop group "Players Only" in his own state of the art 40 track studio. Furthering his music progression is his work with avant-garde Electro group Ectomorph both in the studio and as their tour DJ, proving that this man is always on the move to new territories and new sounds.
